Two years into Nigeria’s current political cycle, the Anglican Church is raising a serious concern: politicians seem more focused on the 2027 elections than on delivering good governance.
This concern was voiced during the Ninth Synod of the
Diocese of Oleh, Anglican Communion, which took place at St. Michael’s Church,
Emevor, in Isoko, Delta State. In a communiqué released at the end of the
gathering, the Synod expressed disappointment over what it described as a
disturbing shift in priorities by elected officials at both the national and
state levels.
The Synod notes with deep concern the growing trend among
political officeholders who appear more focused on preparations for the 2027
elections than on fulfilling their responsibilities to the electorate.
According to the Church, this political obsession is coming
at the cost of governance. Rather than implementing policies that improve the
lives of ordinary Nigerians, the Synod says many leaders are investing more in
political maneuvering, alignments, and realignments aimed at securing their
positions in the next electoral cycle.
The Synod didn’t stop at politics. It also addressed the
country’s worsening security situation. Referring to recent violent attacks on
rural communities like Yelwata, the Church described the loss of lives and
injuries caused by armed bandits as "grossly unacceptable" especially
in a country with multiple security agencies supposedly in place to protect its
people.
The Church is now calling on political leaders to return
their focus to the people they serve, by making governance, not elections,
their priority.
