| Muslim students in Hijab during the protest |
Fresh crisis raised its ugly head in one of Nigeria's North Central states, Kwara State as a clash between Christians and Muslims resulted in the death of a student at Oyun Baptist Secondary School, Ijagbo.
For over a year, there have been regular protests over the issue of the wearing of Hijab by female Muslim students in schools with Christian names but are owned by the State government.
The Punch reports that during a peaceful protest on Thursday morning by students outside the school gate, some armed men violently attacked them, but an unconfirmed report claimed that Habeen Mustapha, a student was feared dead.
In order to forestall further breakdown of law and order, “The Kwara State Government unreservedly condemns the flagrant act of discrimination against anyone, especially children, on religious grounds, says the statement released by the Press Secretary of the ministry in charge of education, Mr Yaqub Aliagan.
In addition, the government shut the school as it says it won't tolerate the refusal of schools to allow Muslim students to wear Hijab. "Such discrimination will not be tolerated in any public-owned institution in the state. While the government and the security agencies continue to work with leaders on all sides, it hereby directs the immediate shutdown of the school pending resolution of the issue," the statement read.
