An Evangelist who had converted to Christianity from a Muslim family had been beaten and an attempt was made to burn him alive by his relatives because they believed that "Allah will reward them in Jannah (garden paradise)."

This bizarre act took place in eastern Uganda, East Africa. Malingumu Bruhan, 34, who converted to Christianity 5 years ago had gone back home to attend his grandfather’s funeral in Muhira village, Nawaikoke when he was attacked.

According to Morning Star News, the unsuspecting Bruhan who had become an evangelist was asked to stay back after the funeral by his uncles, since it had been long they have seen him.

While speaking to a Journalist, Bruhan said, “My uncle accused me of embarrassing them by holding Christian evangelistic, open-air meetings and debates with Muslims... He accused me of being an infidel by converting to Christianity, and that Allah will reward them in Jannah [garden paradise] if they kill me.”

Bruhan said he remained quiet when they said so many negative things about him being a Christian, but his silence made his relatives angry.

“They started beating me up as others gathered firewood, while another was sent to go for petrol because they wanted to use it to burn me alive."

As they were waiting for the fuel, a friend who attended the event with him came looking for him, but they denied knowing where Bruhan was. Luckily, his friend saw his shoe on the floor, which had fallen off as a result of him being beaten and dragged to where he would be killed.

“My friend made several phone calls after finding my shoe, and they arrived and started searching for me,” he said. “They found me behind the house about 100 meters away, tied and with firewood around me. They tried calling the police, which scared the attackers, and they fled.”

The evangelist said he has survived 11 murder attempts since he converted to Christianity and the current attack which took place on February 6 resulted in him having head injuries.
