There are so many ways to understand God better, and in this article, we will be looking at some of these ways.


The Holy Spirit was given to us as a comforter and teacher, who will always guide our way through things. It is the only guide and teacher that help us to get closer to God. Here are some ways through which we can understand God better.


1. Read the Bible: The Bible through the help of the Holy Spirit teaches about God and how to understand his ways better. Getting familiar with the words of God is also getting to know God more, deeper and better. 


Just like the Bible noted in Psalm 119:105, "your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans that "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."


 These two biblical passage helps us to understand that one important route to understanding God better is through reading and understanding his words.


2. Listen to Sermons: Hearing and receiving knowledge about God from others can help make us understand God better.


As we listen to sermons from various godly preachers, we tend to acquire impartation that will open our minds and direct us on understanding God. Preachers like Apostle Joshua Selman, Pastor Olumide Emmanuel, and Pastor Gbile Akanni, amongst others, do have impactful sermons which can assist you to understand God better.


3. Listen to Gospel Songs: Some may think that gospel songs are mere, but they have a deeper meaning than we can imagine. 


In trying to understand God better, gospel music helps to cleanse, fill and enrich our souls to accommodate God's presence. 


A good number of gospel songs are composed of biblical verses. Psalm 150 verse 1 and 2 says that: 1 Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.  


Francis Kingman in an article wrote that "gospels are songs that talk about what the Lord has done in a person's life. It may be about being saved, or how the Lord has blessed them, or about their trials and how the Lord helped them through it all."


He further mentioned that the purpose of gospel songs "is to uplift and encourage the Body of Christ; preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music with the hope of bringing salvation to non-believers; and entertain all people with positive messages and values.


Therefore listening to gospel songs would make one open to understanding God better.


4. Talk Bible With Believers: Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.


Joining a Bible study or attending a fellowship with fellow Christians will make us learn more about God’s Word as we will get to hear sound teaching and grow more in faith. A good bible discussion with believers helps our spiritual growth, as it inspires us to follow and practice the principles of the Bible.


5. Make Yourself Available For The Things of Christ: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven," says Matthew 5:16.


In making yourself available for Christ, you make your mind busy with things related to God's works. Apostle Paul advised Timothy to "not neglect the gift you have." Ways you can become available for Christ include joining groups within the church as it pertains to talents. Becoming a member of the choir, ushering unit, media unit, technical unit and many others


6. Pray Often: The Bible says we should pray without ceasing... That the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.


A popular Christian maxim says prayer is the master key and praying in spirit will create an opportune to become open to receiving directly from God, thereby understanding him better. Having a great and regular praying habit is important for anyone who wants to understand God better.
