A consistent survey on Values and Beliefs which has been held in the past 77 years has recorded a new low based on the numbers of Americans who believed in God.

Gallup released a new poll result which shows a reduced interest in religious activities by Americans, amongst which are the young and liberal.

In 1944, 1947, 1950 and 1960, the question of where Americans believed in God was repeated and the response gotten in these years from the survey was a consistent 98% affirming they believed in God. But the response this year dropped to 81%.

In 2011, 92% of Americans said they believed in God, but a successive survey in 2013 found belief in God dipping below 90% to 87%, roughly where it stood in three subsequent updates between 2014 and 2017, the reports showed.

The political angle

Interestingly more Liberals and Democrats believe less in God than their political conservatives and Republican counterparts.

A close look at these classes mirrored 92% of Republicans believing in God, with Democrats showing less interest with 72%. The liberals (62%) and political conservatives (94%). Gallup revealed that these figures demonstrate "that religiosity is a major determinant of political divisions in the U.S."

Additional questions raised further issues on what Americans' belief in God entails. A particular question raised was whether God hears prayers and whether He intervenes when people pray.

Six in 10 Americans believe God do not hear prayers

God hears prayers and can intervene on a person's behalf is a statement most Americans do not accept as true. The response from the study shows that only 30% of young adults believe God hears prayers and can intervene. Moreover, just 42% of all Americans accept that God hears prayers and can intervene on a person's behalf.

"Meanwhile, 28% of all Americans say God hears prayers but cannot intervene, while 11% think God does neither.

"Nearly three-quarters of the most religious Americans, defined as those who attend religious services every week, say they believe God hears prayers and can intervene, as do slightly more than half of conservatives and Republicans, as well as 25% of liberals and 32% of Democrats," Gallup reports.

The bottom line

Findings from this survey show that year by year, more Americans are showing less belief in God, less than it was in the 50s and 60s when most Americans do. Although a vast majority of Americans still believe in God, irrespective of whether they accept if God hears and answers prayers.
