What is Addiction?

This can be defined as the state of not being able to control the urge to do a particular thing. When you see yourself doing one thing uncontrollably, you have been addicted to that particular thing. Addiction can be good, and it can also be bad. In the world today, the bad ones tend to outnumber the good ones. Anything done continuously for a while is likely to form a habit.

Who is an Addict?

This is a person who has uncontrolled desire for something, he has nurtured that act, and it got to an uncontrolled stage.

In the course of research, I have been able to come up with two kinds or types of what we call addiction, those two are;

1. Positive Addiction

2. Negative Addiction


1. Positive Addiction: This has to do with being addicted to something good, it has no bad effect on the individual. Positive addictions mostly contribute to the physical and Spiritual wellbeing and growth of the individual involved.

A lot of Christians get addicted to Prayer, this is necessary for spiritual growth.

The Bible has implored us to pray without ceasing 1Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 17.

Being addicted to prayer is the best thing to ever happen to a Christian.

Exercising the body is another example too.


2. Negative Addiction: This has to do with acts that damages or leaves adverse effect on the individual. Effects of this form of addiction are the bad ones.

Negative Addictions are mostly physical actions. These actions when started are very hard to stop. 

Funny enough, the majority of human on earth have one or two negative stuffs they're addicted to, some are scared of speaking up for fear of either being judged or misunderstood.

Negative Things People Get Addicted to.

These are the Negative Things People easily get addicted to, though not limited to them alone.

1. Pornography

2. Smoking

3. Excessive Drinking etc

4. Hard Drugs

Causes of Negative Addiction

This article is written out of a real life first hand experience. At some point in my life, I had negative stuffs I was seriously struggling with. 


1. Environmental Factor: A lot of people grew up in where we call "Ghetto", these are places that people smoke openly without seeing anything wrong with that, growing up in that kind of environment can influence you to start a habit that you will later get addicted to.


2. Peer Pressure: Some People started doing the wrong thing not because they wanted to do those things, they did them out pressure from friends.

Some started drinking because they didn't want to be seen by friends as weak people.

Pressure from friends in my own opinion is one of the greatest cause of negative addiction in the world today.

3. Inferiority Complex: This has to do with the feeling that you're not good enough.

4. Poor Parenting: Effect of poor parenting can't be overemphasized. It has destroyed many children.


Effects Of Negative Addiction

1. Poverty

2. Low Self Esteem

3. Violence

4. Isolation

5. Death

Addiction can make someone contemplate on committing suicide

Ways to Overcome Negative Addiction

1. Stay away from those Friends that encourage you to carry out this act: The first step I took to stop smoking was to cut off friends that influenced me negatively.

2. Pray that God helps You: All helps comes from the Lord, ones he's determined on helping you, you'll be helped.

3. Seek Help from Professionals eg Psychiatrists.

4. Don't be Idle, engage in something meaningful. It could be career or learn a profitable skill.

5. Discipline: Try to caution yourself, it is not always easy stopping what you've done for a long time. Discipline is one of the greatest weapons against addiction.
